Morning Prayer is held on Monday 9am and Saturday 10.15am

Everyone is invited to join the “Churches Together” walk on Tuesday 17th September starting from St Michael’s at 12.00 noon.  Bring a packed lunch and we will eat together in church before walking to the Column, then to the Sisters of Jesus Way and St Bridget’s then onto the Methodist Church and up to Riverway before going on to St Agnes, St Andrews and finishing with refreshments at the URC.  Prayers will be said at each venue.  You don’t have to do the whole walk and can join in at any “stage”.  Details of rough timings are on the notice board.  We will need some help with refreshments in church on the day and if you can help, please let Ailsa know.  It would be wonderful to see as many from St Michael’s as possible supporting this important ecumenical pilgrimage as we celebrate unity and pray for our community.

Barn Dance –A super evening of fellowship and fun is planned on the 4th October.  Tickets are now on sale from Angela or Ailsa at £8.00 which will include a Harvest Supper and Alison Shultz and her band as she puts us through our paces.  And remember, you don’t have to dance, come and join in the fun and think about who you can bring.  The evening will be a fund-raising event to raise funds for our church and Ailsa is therefore asking for raffle prizes please.  Would bakers also please let her know if you can help on the evening and what you can bring to share – and – those with a slow-cooker – please make yourself known to Ailsa!

Eighth Sunday after Trinity

In the Solomon Islands sea levels are reported as having risen by up to 12 millimetres per year over the last twenty-five years. According to the Royal Society, this shows a stark contrast with the best whole global estimate of just 3.2 millimetres over a similar period.

Rising sea levels in the pacific are exacerbated by the natural trade wind cycle. Studies of the coastlines of reef islands in the Solomons indicate that five islands have disappeared entirely since 1947. Although these were tiny islands (the largest no more than 5 hectares), their fate is a worrying portent of what may happen on the bigger islands. The salt water threat to fresh water supplies and agricultural productivity is very real.

The bleak outlook across so many South Pacific nations is encouraging some local people to seek a life elsewhere – to become in effect climate refugees. Others determinedly seek to implement ameliorating structures locally and urge larger nations to support the effort to reduce or stem global warning. The current plight of the south Pacific indicates the developing threat to the whole globe.

Pray for island nations threatened by rising sea levels.
